About

I'm Mahesha Chayapathi — a software engineer by profession, and someone who found his way back to himself through the quiet of forests, the weight of a pack, and the patience of waiting for light.

It started simply enough — a visit to Yellowstone and Grand Teton in 2006 that left something open in me I didn't know how to close. Hiking came later, almost by accident, as recovery after a marathon. But somewhere on those early trails I discovered that being in nature wasn't just exercise. It was something closer to medicine.

I didn't set out to become a photographer. I set out to stay outside longer.

Like a lot of people, I carry the quiet weight of stress, anxiety, and the relentless pace of modern life. What I've found — slowly, imperfectly, and one trail at a time — is that nature has a way of loosening all of that. Not fixing it. Just making it lighter. A few miles in, the noise fades. Something simpler takes over.

This site exists because I believe that experience isn't unique to me. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the world and found even a moment of peace on a trail, at a summit, or beside moving water — you already know what I mean. And if you haven't tried it yet, maybe something here will make you want to.

This site is a home for the trips that shaped me and the photographs that came back with me. Landscape and wildlife are my main subjects — the patient kind of photography where you sit with a scene until the light does something unexpected, or wait at a riverbank until something wild surfaces.

Most of my gear lives in a pack on my back. I shoot with a Nikon D810 and a small collection of lenses chosen more for weight than versatility. A tripod comes along when the light demands it.
