Ice Hiking on Perito Moreno Glacier

The pickup was at 4am — dark, cold, and electric with anticipation. A van full of strangers, all of us quietly excited for the same thing, winding through the pre-dawn roads toward Los Glaciares National Park.

Nothing quite prepares you for the first sight of Perito Moreno. The scale of it is simply beyond what the mind expects — a wall of ancient ice stretching further than you can see in either direction, groaning and shifting with a life of its own. We walked the boardwalk in near silence. I think we were all a little stunned.

The boat crossing brought us closer to the glacier's face, and with every hundred meters the views grew more impossible. Then came the forest walk along the glacier's edge — a strange, beautiful contrast of green and white — before we strapped on crampons and stepped onto the ice itself.

Moving across a glacier is unlike anything I've experienced on a trail. The ice beneath your feet is blue and ancient and endlessly textured. We wound deeper into it, past crevasses and frozen formations that had no business existing on this planet. At some point I stopped thinking about anything else entirely. That's the gift of a place like this.

After lunch we descended into an ice cave — walls glowing an impossible shade of blue. I moved quickly, reaching the end first, and turned back to photograph the other hikers making their way down into that blue light. It's one of my favorite frames from the entire trip.

Then my crampon failed. A faulty binding, a wrong step, and my ankle rolled hard on the ice. The hike back to the trailhead was slow and painful — every step a negotiation.

But here's the thing about days like this: the pain faded. The photographs remained. And the memory of standing lost inside a glacier, surrounded by blue ice and silence, fills me with something I can only call ecstasy — even now.

Some adventures cost you something. This one was worth every bit of it.
